Brad Hawkins

Brad Hawkins discusses his film of the year: Boyhood. This was a radical film in that it followed the life of a young actor for 12 years. The film was a huge risk, but it was worth it. Brad Hawkins also speaks about his upcoming projects and his first time at the Movieguide Awards.

Did you see the film Boyhood? What did you think of it? Did you like Brad Hawkins’ character?

Host: Hi brad I’m Machelle.

Brad: Hi.

Host: Nice to meet you. I’m with Faith Hollywood so you get a microphone too. So, let’s see how we’re doing.

Brad: Testing, testing 1…2…3.

Host: So that’s our camera. So, we look pretty good, so we’re set.

Brad: This is as good as it’s going to get.

Host: With that lighting yeah. I mean I’m just all good.

Brad: I know this sun just comes out and attacks your head.

Host: I know I’m already getting a tan but that’s okay. We’re at the 2015 Movieguide awards and guys I am here with Brad Hawkins from Boyhood. How are you Brad?

Brad: Awesome, awesome. What a year.

Host: I bet.

Brad: I mean it’s only February. Yeah, it’s been a great year.

Host: Boy, and you guys got so much attention. Now, can you tell our viewers what Boyhood is about? Cause, there’s…

Brad: Yeah… let’s squeeze twelve years into about 30 seconds. Richard Linklater is the writer and director and basically the mastermind behind the whole thing. He wanted to somehow put on screen what it’s like to grow up. And he figured out there isn’t’ really a way to do that in a short amount of time. So, his passion project was ‘I want to cast a kid at six years old and I want to follow him for twelve years in real time in his life’ until the final frame of the movie is him going off to college.

Host: What an amazing concept I’m just surprised no one has even thought of that.

Brad: And I don’t know if anyone will ever be able. It’s just a matter of time. I mean who has twelve years to just devote to a project?

Host: It requires patience, but he must’ve had a lot of passion.

Brad: He did, and his passion was probably the biggest selling tool to get IFC, which I’m so proud of IFC for believing in him, believing in the project, and going ‘look whatever you’re a part of, we’re in’. And they gave him the funding even though you’re looking at a fourteen-year payout or maybe not. Maybe something goes wrong and we don’t even finish the movie in year nine. I mean there’s so many things that could’ve gone wrong and it didn’t.

Host: It was huge risk, but it was well worth it. Now, this is your first time at the Movieguide Awards. So, what do you think of this so far?

Brad: Yes, I’ve never been here before, but this is so perfect, and this is so necessary because with faith based and family content it’s so necessary that we have something that acknowledges that in its own right and in its own award show with its own peers. That’s why I’m just really grateful to be here. I can already feel the love.

Host: Yeah, we do our best here.

Brad: And you know, there’s Golden Globes and there’s SAG and there’s Oscars but this is, this and this is special.

Host: It has this small-town family feel to it.

Brad: And I like that. I’m from Texas so I like small town feels.

Host: Perfect. So what projects of yours should we be looking forward to in the future?

Brad: I’m so excited so I don’t know but I’m out here taking meetings with a couple different networks and tv shows and I’m really excited about it. So hopefully within the next 30-45 days I should have some news to announce.

Host: Yay!

Brad: Yeah so, I’m out here and I’m excited. I’m ready to get back into television.

Host: Awesome. You did a wonderful job in Boyhood and thank you so much for being here tonight and I wish you the best and hopefully we’ll see you again in the future.
