He’s sly, maniacal, and quite possibly the most cunning adversary of them all, Cory Michael Smith gives the viewers a performance as the Riddler formidable to Jim Carrey’s rendition of the character decades ago. While an unsuspecting badass we have seen the character of the Riddler transform from a lowly nobody in the Gotham City Police Department into a psychotic wordsmith. It has truly been an intriguing journey that Smith has brought to life, with struggle of his own mental sanity as well as social norms and relationships, we see in Season 3 of Fox’s Gotham the fully formed Riddler. Smith’s character, much like the rest of the ensemble of baddies, knows how to survive by any means and so Smith dives into some of his most trying moments throughout the series.
The real life Riddler discussed how even the name brings some dark comedy to his routine of becoming a villain specifically stating how it’s difficult to intimidate someone with words while everyone else in Gotham will utilize physical methods. But we see Edward Nygma come into fruition, in part due to his romantic relationship to Ms. Cringle, and take pride in his name by trying to mature into a graceful and elegant enemy. Smith notes how those are the ones that can truly cause fear, the soft spoken and unsuspecting psycho. Much like co-star Jessica Lucas, Smith talks about the importance of allegiances and brings up his relationship with Penguin, which was something of a rollercoaster. While Penguin attempted to express romantic feelings for Nygma that ended in heart break on both ends due to jealousy and deceit. The Riddler also allys himself with Butch for a short while but it should come to no surprise that allegiances in Gotham are rarely ever permanent so we shall see where the Riddle falls on the food chain of Gotham in season 4.
