“Movin to the groovin” one more time, it’s 1979 – “Mama Mia! Here We Go Again”, a musical and romantic comedy that unlocks the mystery of Donna’s life (before the birth of her daughter, Sophie), and combines it with Sophie’s life without her. As their stories peel back, it reveals the combination of great love and strength. Sophie’s story begins with love that is loss and a song, “I Have a Dream”- with a storm that approaches and threatens the Grand Opening of the Bella Donna Hotel.
Donna Sheridan’s story unfolds when she, the ex-patriate graduates from Oxford College and convinces her singing gal pals, “The Dynamos” to travel to Greece. They thrive in a life of simplicity on this tiny little Greek island – and its’ rollicking fun. But as Donna’s young friends, Tanya (Jessica Keenan Wynn), and Rosie (Alexa Davies) tire and decide to leave the peaceful island, Donna stays behind and harbors a deep secret.
This sequel and prequel unravels with flashbacks from an ensemble cast from the first movie, Mama Mia! with Donna’s lovers; Sam (Pierce Brosnan), Harry (Colin Firth) and Bill (Stellan Skarsgard) – and her singing gal pal, best friends; Tanya (Christine Baranski), and Rosie (Julie Walters).
It’s a heart throbbing movie which combines the old cast with the new cast – and the younger version of Donna’s lovers, Harry (Hugh Skinner), Sam (Jeremy Irvine) and Bill (Josh Dylan) – is a recipe for deliciousness. But when the storm hits and people can’t find a way to the island – it’s here where you find the whole (reunion) party and possible guests are taken to a test. Locked in and star struck there are loads of memorable songs, and of course there is ABBA ; “Dancing Queen”, “The Name of the Game” and the swooning song, “Angel Eyes”. It sizzles in 70’s dance numbers, bell bottom pants, gold hippy boots and funny one liners for laughter.
The younger version of Donna, (Lily James) steals the soul by captivating us all with her subtle, yet witty charm, natural beauty, awesome singing voice and grooves in mojo dance moves (this girl has #seriouscharisma). The young versions of Harry, (Hugh Skinner), Sam, (Jeremy Irvine) and Bill (Josh Dylan) dazzle the screen in humor, hunky dance dynamism and with sultry singing voices.
Many star – studded moments captivate, but the one that really thrusts you in your seat and creates a huge heart beat is when Donna’s absent mother and Sophie’s grandmother, Ruby Sheridan (Cher) crashes the party and sings “Fernando”. It’s positively in a way that only “Cher” can enter a room and conjure up a powerful potion of performance. In a little duet, she sings with the hotel manager, Fernando (Andy Garcia) and love reunites again between the two. The Grand Opening, the grand party heats up – one more time and on one more note of meaningful magical music.
Spoiler alert – so please stop here if you have read enough. But the next tearful magical song hits when Donna and Sophie sing a duet, “My love, My life”. It’s cosmically a beautiful moment and so appropriate for a final song. A story of love, loss and deep-rooted passions in life – A mother and daughter’s endearing love and their friendships align.
This movie makes me wish I was back in my 20’s – to experience young love again – and to be “in love” when you have so many passions for life. It’s a time that’s hard to pinpoint what to do next – And then there is that one final pivotal moment and an epiphany happens! If you are looking for a “feel good, heart – warming” movie with bits of laughter and nostalgia for ABBA – then you will enjoy this onscreen musical performance. But prepared, you may shed a tear or two.
