After just graduating college in 1979, young Donna and her friends, Rosie and Tanya, decide to travel the world. Donna travels solo and heads to the beautiful island of Kalokairi, Greece. Along the way she meets three charming young men. She falls immediately in love with Sam, who ultimately breaks her heart. Alone on a strange island she discovers that she is pregnant and must figure out how to raise a child on her home. Meanwhile in present day, Donna’s daughter, Sophie, works on updating the hotel that her mother worked so hard for. She works to reopen it with the help of her three fathers and her mother’s friends. She finds herself in a situation similar to her mother and struggles to cope with this development.
After waiting for 10 years in anticipation, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again opened this weekend in theaters across the nation. I saw it opening night and loved every delightful minute.
The film opens a couple years after the original Mamma Mia! film left off. I won’t go into too many details, but it features the same lovable characters in the same breath-taking location.
This film follows the life of Young Donna who decides that “life is short, and the world is wide” so she decides to “make some memories”. And that’s just what she does. She travels across Europe to Kalokairi, Greece and meets three amazing men along the way: Harry, Bill, and Sam. In typical Donna fashion, she finds herself in the wildest adventures and falls in love with the three men.
The story parallels with that of her older daughter, Sophie who struggles on what to do when she becomes pregnant just like her mother. She also listens to her mother’s friends and past lovers retell their stories of Donna when she was Sophie’s age.
Of course, you can’t forget about the songs in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. The Mamma Mia cast does a fantastic job of singing the songs that ABBA released years ago. They feel fresh and new and will definitely be stuck in your head for weeks to come. The cast even got help from Benny Andersson and Bjorn Ulvaeus for this new film, so you know that the songs are authentic to the original ABBA feel.
Despite using songs from a famous band, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again stands on its own in the originality department. It tells a fun and familiar story about what it’s like to be young and feel like you are invincible. In my opinion, this film has more depth than its predecessor as it goes into what Donna, and now Sophie, are feeling as they try to figure out how to lie and, what’s more, prosper on their own with a child on the way.
The film also does a good job of keeping to the original story. In the first film, Sophie briefly goes into how her mother met each of her possible fathers and later in the film we find out more information about why they didn’t end up together. The second film does not stray from these stories and simply goes into them in more detail.
Overall, Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, was a great film. It used aspects of the first story but created a more, insightful story for the second film. It incorporated the ABBA songs that we have loved and made them feel new. I loved every minute of the songs and the story; I even cried at the end!
