“The strong man who has known power all his life may lose respect for that power, but a weak man knows the value of strength, and knows compassion. Whatever happens tomorrow you must promise me one thing. That you will stay who you are. Not a perfect soldier, but a good man” – Dr. Abraham Erskine, Captain America: The First Avenger (2011)
Back in 1942, World War II was in full swing, when a small, sickly boy from Brooklyn wanted to join up and fight for his country. Steve Rogers (Chris Evans) was too headstrong and morally-driven to listen to all the doctors telling him not to enlist. With the help of Dr. Abraham Erskine, he joined the army, where he took an experimental serum that turned him into our superhero, Captain America. As Captain America, he performed and raised money for the troops, but it wasn’t enough for Steve. Alone, he snuck behind enemy lines to free his fellow soldiers and his childhood best friend, Bucky Barnes (Sebastian Stan). With his best friend and a new team by his side, Captain America goes on to fight against the Nazi rogue science division collecting powerful weapons across the continent – Hydra.
Marvel Studios kicks off the Captain America franchise with this action-packed piece of historical fiction based off their best selling comic character. Steve Rogers’ Captain America embodies everything good about American patriotism, willingness to fight for the rights of others no matter the personal cost, and the courage to fight (and even die) so those you love can live. Captain America: The First Avenger shows the greatest strengths of the greatest generation – ability to put aside our differences to focus on something bigger than ourselves, and save ourselves from the end of the world. This bittersweet, yet uplifting story will touch hearts of historical fiction enthusiasts and action lovers alike.
