Hook is a 1991 fantasy film that is directed by Steven Spielberg, the film follows an adult Peter Pan and serves as a sequel to the adventures of Peter and Wendy. Peter Pan (Robin Williams) in the film is a 40 year old workaholic who has forgotten about his childhood in Neverland, but when Captain Hook (Dustin Hoffman) kidnaps his children and shows them a life without rules Pan is faced with another obstacle. Throughout Pan’s journey in Neverland he is met with old friends and begins to reclaim his past as a imaginative lost boy, after gaining the trust from the new leader of the lost boys they work together to put a stop Captain Hook. The film is filled with fun scenes that are reminiscent of the original Peter Pan film and includes many of the same phrases the lost boys and Peter would say. Tinkerbell is introduced in the film and the audience get to see a whole different side from her previous roles in the disney animations. The film ends with a thrilling battle between Hook and Pan once and for all.
The film Hook emphasizes the need to find one’s inner child. Peter Pan learns how to let go in Neverland and can speak to how much life can get banal and seem. Without the lost boys and Tinkerbell, Peter may have never been able to find his imagination again. The movie is nostalgic for those who loved Peter Pan growing up because they are able to see what happened after he said goodbye to Wendy and then said goodbye to Neverland. One of the biggest lessons Peter Pan learns is how much he needs to spend time with his family and less time at work. Peter Pan sees the importance of being able to have fun and laugh again in Neverland and he takes that with him back home. The characters in the film all work well with one another, making the relationship dynamics fun to see. Hook’s persona is evil, yet misunderstood because he is a case of a lost boy who was never saved. Hook is a film for all ages and carries a message that can resonate well with hard working parents in search of light in dark times. I would rate this film a 7/10, because it can get draggy and violent, but it still is lighthearted.
