As a product of a forbidden love between his father (Temuera Morrison) and Queen Atlanna (Nicole Kidman), Arthur Curry (Jason Momoa) lives his life as the bridge between the two worlds of land and sea. However, as the condemned relationship of his parents eventually led to the sacrifice of his mother, Arthur was in turn excommunicated and banned from Atlantis. Despite this, Vulko (Willem Defoe) makes a promise to the late queen to train Arthur to be the next king; through the power of flashbacks, we see Arthur begin his journey into becoming Aquaman from boyhood to adulthood. Fast-forward to the aftermath of Steppenwolf’s defeat by the Justice League, Arthur’s presence as Aquaman is known across the land and sea.
After coming across a gang of pirates that take over a submarine, Arthur makes a lifelong enemy with a pirate who eventually takes the name of Manta (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II), after leaving him and his father to sink with the ship. Shortly after the death of his father, Manta seeks revenge and continues his secret work with King Orm (Patrick Wilson), the current king of Atlantis and younger brother to Arthur. As they work together, King Orm sends out a deadly tsunami, nearly killing Arthur and his father until Mera (Amber Heard) comes to their rescue.
As for the rest of the world, decades worth of litter and trash disposed into the sea were thrown back from the water, along with many shipwrecks and deaths along the coast- this marked the warning of the war between land and sea. Mera finally convinces Arthur to join her in taking his rightful place as king in order to stop the war, along with a treasure hunt for the lost trident of King Atlan. As Mera and Arthur race to find the trident, King Orm races to join the nations to become the Ocean Master, which would grant him the power required to begin his war. As Arthur realizes his legacy, he takes on King Orm to stop the war and take his rightful place as king. In a full length battle between the underwater nations, Arthur takes the title of both Aquaman and King of Atlantis.
Aquaman is a refreshing take on a DC origin story and is a worthy addition to the line-up. Jason Momoa not only brings the action to Arthur Curry, but a fun and sarcastic comedy that makes Aquaman a stand-out film. With just the right amount of slow-motion, fight scenes, and gratuitous shirtless Momoa scenes, the movie is guaranteed to be the next box-office hit of the holiday season.
