Disney takes on the retelling of a historical Chinese legend, Hua Mulan. Set during the time of the Han Dynasty, China becomes subject to a Hun invasion that threatens the very peace of China as the world knew it. Fa Mulan (Ming-Na Wen), the protagonist and young woman eager to honor her family, finds herself stumbling into a full length adventure. Once word of the Hun invasion spread throughout the country, a draft for all men was called for. Mulan, desperate to save her father from the draft, takes his place and impersonates as his fictional son, Ping, to serve in the Chinese army. Training under Captain Li Shang (BD Wong), Mulan is met with a ragtag group of soldiers and an array of challenges that go beyond her physical capabilities. As her training as Ping progresses successfully, and after a couple of mischievous schemes by Mushu (Eddie Murphy) and Crickee, the group finds themselves traveling to the front lines to help with the war efforts against the Huns. Mulan not only trains to save China, but to bring honor to her herself and her family.
Mulan has a special place in my heart, for more than one reason. As one of the first strong, independent woman to grace the Disney franchise, Mulan is easily one of the stand-out characters amongst the princesses. Her story not only tells of her bravery, but also of the ability to achieve greatness in any scenario, no matter their situation. Mulan sends a message of strength and hope to all audiences, young and old, male or female.

Not to mention, I’m a 11 year veteran of San Diego Comic Con! I’ve been going since 2007 consecutively, and have met celebrities ranging from Youtube content creators to Marvel actors on the silver screen. Aside from the convention center and studio, bookstores and coffee shops are a second home to me. | Instagram @KCRTishTalk | View My Articles
