Krypton | S1 – Review by Alan Santellanes

krypton-movie-posterIn early 2018, Syfy premiered a show that takes place in the DC Universe. The series is called Krypton and it centers around the life in the planet Krypton; specifically, around Superman’s grandfather Seg-El who must stop a dark matter Braniac that will take over many worlds. In order to do that, he must convince the Kryptonians that Braniac exists, so that his future grandson, Superman, can exist as Earth’s savior & so his family’s reputation get cleared.

The Pilot opens with the House of El in a courthouse on Krypton for Val-El’s, Seg-El’s grandfather, execution. After his execution, we jump 14 years later, where Seg-El is 23 years old and his family lives without privileges (called Rankless). So, Seg earns money from fighting others at a bar owned by his best friend, Kem. We also learn that the House of El, specifically Val-El, had suspicions of threatening life outside of Krypton, but was silenced and executed. When a human being from the future Adam Strange approaches Seg and tells him to save the world and his future grandson, who turns out to be Superman.

While trying to stop Braniac, Seg must keep it a secret while he finds real proof about its true existence, which brings tension every episode. Will Seg-El get caught? Will he be able to convince the authorities? Also, there are side plots in this first season. There is a love-triangle between Seg, Nyssa-Vex (daughter of the chief), and Lyta-Zod (Seg’s secret girlfriend); it formed when Seg saved the chief by stopping a Kryptonian who had a bomb. After saving him, Daron-Vex, the chief, summoned Seg to give him a title again and his daughter; thus, pushing Seg’s relationship with Lyta in the shadows. However, Lyta has problems, like trying to become a commander in her squadron (NO SPOILER ALERT).

The writers did an amazing job with the parallels of the past, present & future as well as character foils. Seg and Superman have grandfathers who need to expose the dark matter to save their loved ones. Speaking of Seg and Superman, they both are related but they are totally different. Superman knows what to do in situations he gets in; whereas, Seg needs to adapt to making choices and fix his morals (which makes him relatable and open for great character development in the rest of the series. Another foil is the frenemy-like relationship between Seg and Adam as they bunt heads about the truth of Superman and how they disagree with each other’s choices.

Overall, the series is a great one to engage in for any superhero, especially DC, fan. The characters and the stories they have are relatable: from self-identity, relationships, class-social systems &, not to mention, politics. Krypton is great for anyone who doesn’t know the history of the planet Krypton, and for anyone who wants to see the story from the comics to the screen. Based on the cliffhanger from the season one finale, I cannot wait for season two coming later, in 2019!
