Krypton | S1 Review by Edith Zamora

krypton_tv_series-151052220-largeSyfy’s brand new exciting series Krypton delves into the life of not Superman, but the origin of Superman meaning his grandfather’s life story, Seg-El (Cameron Cuffe)! The series features plenty of fresh iconic, comic characters such as Adam Strange (Shaun Sipos), Brainiac (Blake Ritson), Lyta Zod (Georgina Campbell), and all the other Zod’s to name a few! In this new series we learn more about Superman by going into the times that was before Superman’s! What more can geeks ask for?

As we look about 2 centuries into the past, yes, the show is centered 200 million years before Clark’s, we learn that there is a lot behind the legacy of Superman. Seg-El, grandfather of Clark Kent, faces many predicaments, especially the one that revolves around the conspiracy that he receives from friend, Adam Strange, a human from Earth who is from the future. Strange sends a message to Seg-El that someone (Brainiac) is trying to erase the existence of Superman. The ultimate mission is to stop him from doing so!

Seg-El and his parents are shamed and sent to the lower-class slums of Kandor after Seg-El’s grandfather, Val-El (Ian McElhinney) is executed for treason. This gives context into the life of what could have been, Clark Kent’s home. For that reason, Seg-El’s motivation and mission is encompassed to continue the legacy of the El family and improve the way life works in Kandor.

Speaking of the way how life works in Kandor, Seg-El is set to marry the daughter of the man who executed his grandfather, Nyssa (Wallis Day). She is the daughter of Daron-Vex (Elliot Cowan), the chief magistrate. All the while this marriage is in question, Seg-El is in love with Lyta-Zod (Georgina Campbell). Later, Seg and Nyssa create a child in the Genesis Chamber. Again with the ironic drama, Lyta-Zod is the daughter of the woman who kills Seg-El’s parents, Jayna-Zod (Ann Ogbomo). Jayna is the woman all should fear as she is powerful and merciless. In fact, she fights and trains her own daughter to teach her to “Never ask for mercy!”

Jayna-Zod, member of the Sagitari has good intentions. Opposite of the Sagitari are the “Black Zero” agents, or terrorists of Kandor. The leader of Kandor is the voice of Rao, but this guy is not a good guy to begin with. Due to his orders, Nyssa and Daron want to overthrow him.

Towards the end of the series, Brainiac arrives to Kandor to cause havoc and destroy the city once and for all. Before he could do that, Seg has him trapped in the Phantom Zone, but even though his plan works, he gets trapped alongside him. As Adam Strange is his sidekick, he is there holding Superman’s cape, but the crest of Superman becomes a crest of Zod. That was a great way to end the series! What does that mean? What is going to happen? Luckily, Syfy renewed the series for a second round! Only time will tell on what will happen, and that timing is sometime in 2019! Be sure to resume the series on Syfy!
