Supernatural | Midseason TV Review

ca761d066d928904352a82408d072cd0Supernatural follows the two Winchester brothers Sam and Dean, as they hunt demons, vampires, ghosts, witches and other Supernatural monsters.

The fourteenth season of Supernatural premiered on October 11, 2018 on the CW. The Winchester brothers have gone through a long journey and they keep going. Season thirteen ended with Dean (Jensen Ackles) being possessed by Michael and going off on his own. This season, weeks into Dean being possessed, he goes around asking supernatural beings what they want. Anael (Danneel Ackles) is an angel who comes back to earth to warn Sam (Jared Padalecki) about what Michael has been doing. Sam now has to balance being the leader of a new hunter group while searching for his brother and killing anyone who might want to be the new king of hell to send the message that their will be no new king. Because no demon can ever replace Crowley (Mark Sheppard) right?

Jack (Alexander Calvert) has become one of my favorite recurring characters, I hope he remains permanent on the show. His innocent, yet tough as nails, personality refreshes the show. He starts training with Bobby (Jim Beaver) and finds his grandparents. Meanwhile, Lucifer having died in the previous season, has left Nick acting like Lucifer (Mark Pellegrino), he sets out on getting revenge when he learns that the death of his family was never solved. He finds the only witness and after getting answers, he kills him. Dean mysteriously returns to Sam after Michael leaves his body. Dean is left feeling responsible for everything Michael did. Castiel (Misha Collins) discovers Michael left Dean’s body because of Kaia Nieves who came from the Bad Place, she was able to hurt Michael with a magical spear. And Jack starts coughing up blood, since he doesn’t have his Grace, he’s basically dying.

While Sam and Dean battle the main issues, they also battle their regular job as hunters. However, this season so far doesn’t focus too much on their normal (for them) hunting activities. The story centers on the main issues, finding a grace for Jack so he doesn’t die, Michael, and Nick (Mark Pellegrino) dealing with his life without Lucifer and even praying for him- that was something new that I actually like because it’s ironic and well, very dark. When Jack finally dies without his Grace, we see a new side of Sam, Dean and Cass who all grew to care for Jack, he was basically the adopted son. They drink to him to the point of getting drunk. I love this moment in the season because it reminds you that although Sam and Dean are hunters who have been through a lot, they still have their humanity and care about those around them.

Cass visits Jack in heaven when a new threat known as The Empty rises. We get a tender moment of happiness when Jack meets his mom, until The Empty shows up to take him, since he’s part angel. But Cass comes to the rescue and makes a deal with The Empty, Jack comes back to life with his Grace intact. A lot of beloved characters make a presence this season, Bobby, Mary (Samantha A. Smith), Garth (DJ Qualls) and even Rowena (Ruth Connell). No one ever really stays dead, which is a good thing when you don’t want them to die.

Garth spies on Michael pretending to be a werewolf interested in following him, but things don’t work out because Michael never bought his act. Turns out, Garth took a mixture of Michael’s blood mixed with his aura in order to prove himself, but it just allowed Michael to control him. Sam, Dean, Cass and Jack do whatever it takes to take Michael down. And just when they are about to kill Michael, the mid-season ends when Michael snaps his fingers and possess Dean once more.

Superatural has been running for fourteen years. It is CW’s most successful show. One of the reasons I believe the show to be successful is because they always bring characters that make you keep watching because you want to see how their story plays out. Jack is that character this season so far, hopefully he doesn’t die again, and if he should, I’m sure he will keep coming back like Bobby and Mary. The mid-season returned on January 17, and episode 13 will mark Supernatural’s 300 episode, where we will see John Winchester (Jeffrey Dean Morgan) return! It will be the family reunion fans have been looking for so be sure not to miss it.
