Captain Sparkle Fingers! aka Shazam is an AMAZING superhero film that is all about family and I have to say it is a great way for DC to start this year off. I was laughing in my seat for majority of the film and it is all because of Zachary Levi and Jack Dylan Grazer. One of the things that I really enjoyed about the film was that it was very realistic in how a teenager would take on the role of a “superhero”. Billy Batson (Asher Angel) is just a young fourteen year old foster kid that is hellbent on finding his birth mother, he had no interest in being a hero until he met Freddy Freeman (Jack Dylan Grazer), his new foster brother, who is a HUGE superhero fan. Throughout the entire film you can see that Billy, and majority of the main characters, are all fighting this inner battle within to just be good enough or worthy. Billy wants to be worthy of his mother’s love, Freddy wants to be seen past his disability, all of the foster children want to be worthy to the outside world and even the villain Dr. Thaddeus Sivana wants to be worthy of his father’s love.
At the beginning of the film set in New York 1974, Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong) was finally given the chance to become the man that his father has always wanted him to be. The Wizard Shazam (Djimon Hounsou) brought the young Thaddeus to his home and told him of his mission. He was the keeper of the Seven Deadly Sins and the protector of the Rock of Eternity, but he was growing weak and he is the last of his kind. His mission was to find a champion that was pure of heart and strong in spirit to take his place and protect all of the realms. Thaddeus had to be tested in order for the wizard to know, but the Seven Deadly Sins could see his desire and tempted him to take the Rock of Eternity to show his father and brother that he is truly a man. Thaddeus failed his test and was thrown back into his car because only the purest of hearts could resist that temptation. Distraught, the young man felt a pit of unworthiness at the bottom of his heart and made it his one and only mission to find his way back to the Wizard and prove to him that he was wrong.
Then we are taken to the present in Philadelphia and that is when we meet Billy Batson, he is in the middle of one his schemes to find his mother, Rachel Batson, so that he can finally be home. Unfortunately it all ends in a bust and he is thrown in yet another foster home, but this one is a little different compared to the others. His new foster parents were once foster kids and the children in the home all shower Billy with love, especially Darla Dudley (Faithe Herman). That is when Billy meets his foster brother Freddy, the two don’t hit it off so well because Billy is already planning on shortening his stay so that he can continue searching for his mother. But he he’s been to over 20 door steps and he was feeling hopeless. Billy is like any other young teen that is struggling to know who he really is and just wants to feel like he belongs. The only thing he has is his mother and maybe just maybe she can shine a little light in his life and everything that has ever gone wrong will just be casted aside, cause he will finally be home.
Billy is then given his opportunity to become champion to the Wizard after defending Freddy from two high school bullies. The Wizard tells Billy that there has been a champion in the past, but they chose poorly and he released the Seven Deadly Sins and together they wrecked havoc amongst all the realms. That is when he decided that only the purest of hearts would be worthy enough to be champion and Billy was a truly gifted person. After transferring his powers he then tells Billy of the danger that the world is in and he is all that they have. Stuck in a grown man’s body, Shazam (Zachary Levi), he rushes to the only person that can help, Freddy. Together the two discover his powers and they work to turn Billy into the hero he was destined to become. Zachary Levi and Jack Dylan Grazer did a magnificent job together as hero and sidekick and it was funny to see Freddy to his “secret power tests” on Billy. Even though Billy was practicing “hero stuff” he is still only fourteen years old and he doesn’t understand what it actually means to be a hero. He has a lot to learn especially with the superpowered Dr. Thaddeus Sivana coming his way to steal his power from him.
I highly recommend this film to those who love superheroes, family films, and are just dying to laugh. You get all three in this one film and I guarantee you will not leave disappointed!

Hi! My name is Krista Buligon and I am a Senior at San Diego Christian College. I am a student athlete majoring in Communication with an emphasis in the Film and Media. I have always had a strong interest in all types of movies because they take me to another world. But my favorite places to go to are New York with a crazy spider kid saving the day, Gotham with a vigilante dressed as a bat fighting a penguin or joker, the wizarding world of Hogwarts with a kid with a scar on his head fighting “He Who Shall Be Named”, or a galaxy far far away with jedi knights battling sith lords with colorful lightsabers. My friends always laugh and call me a super nerd for loving any forms of science fiction but those movies shape me into who I am today. When I am not on the basketball court or working at In N Out Burger I am either on my couch watching movies or writing for fun. I hope that after I graduate I can turn my writing hobby into a career and impact others the way movies have always impacted me. Instagram: @Princess_Krista11 | View My Projects
