Hobbs Shaw (Movie Review) by Danielle B.

unnamed(1)Fast & The Furious: Hobbs & Shaw will be a treat for fans once they will see the dynamic between Luke Hobbs (Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson) and Deckhard Shaw (Jason Statham) fight against Brixton Lore (Idris Elba), aka the Black Superman, or perhaps Cyborg Victor Stone or maybe even Amazo. Hobbs & Shaw make it their mission to get to Deckhard’s sister Katie Shaw (Vanessa Kirby) who injected an infectious virus within her, preventing Brixton to get his hands on it. For those who have kept up with the trailers, Brixton expresses that this virus could wipe off half of earth’s population. It’s his mission to get the virus back while Hobbs & Shaw help Katie extract the virus, while preventing Brixton from getting his hands on it. Aside from the action and comedy, this film also brings topics for discussion regarding technology, communication and family.

The dynamic with Hobbs & Shaw is hilarious. Audiences will be laughing watching the two have their bickering moments. The comedy and action between the two carry the story well without losing focus of the overall results of their mission. Similarly, they both deal with communication and family. They both reconnect with their siblings and families. Shaw and his sister Katie are brought together. Just as Hobbs is reunited with his brother Jonah (Cliff Curtis) and his family members too. Not to mention an appearance from family member Roman Reigns. Hobb’s family helps them fight Brixton and they show the importance of family within their culture that many can relate regarding collectivism. It’s refreshing and rewarding to see Dwyane’s culture be represented in the film along with a Haka performance. It’s also rewarding to see representation in this film with Dwyane, Idris, (spoiler alert) Kevin Hart, & Eliza González. I strongly appreciate that. Regardless of their individual roles, seeing them portray their characters made me love them with how they worked to carry the story. Additionally, families who watch this film together will also appreciate the message of bonding with your loved ones.

Having both Hobbs & Shaw reunite with their family members show that when the fate of the world is in your hands, all that matters is that you have the people you love close with you. Past arguments don’t matter when it comes to family. Reach out, make amends and tell the ones you love that you appreciate them while you still have the time to. Although all families are different, this film allows audiences to see that people still try to do good for the people they love regardless of the issues between people. The other dicussion that was clearly shown is the presentation of technology and the perspectives of how people look at it.

Brixton Lore, although the villain, is amazing in this film. He’s honestly my favorite character. Idris Elba portrays this superhuman using technology for his advances. He says he’s the Black Superman and upon seeing his performance, you’ll see how incredible he is. Watching him did remind me of Victor Stone aka Cyborg and even Amazo. Brixton uses the technology on him to analyze Hobbs & Shaw to better prevent their attacks on him, gathering information in order to strike them down. Additionally, the technology on him keeps him alive. Shaw is actually responsible for killing Brixton once before. This reminded me a lot like Cyborg. (Another thought I had was based on a Milestone Comics character. With the mention of DC character’s in this film along with Idris Elba’s performance of how strong, quick, and intelligent he is, he can potentially play Augustus Freeman aka Icon in a live action movie). Brixton’s character argues how technology is far advances compared to humans. While Hobbs debates that although we have all these technological advances, it does not replace people. This brings to discussion if does technology solve our problems that we can’t rely on others to fix them. Or, if it helps us and we are not fully under its control.

I enjoyed this film so much that I want to watch it again! It’s hilarious, exciting and it just put a smile on my face. For those who are planning to see this, I encourage you to go and maybe you’ll end up wanting to binge watch the past films all over again.
